What are the Best Travel Movies to see in 2021?

Sometimes you need inspiration to pick your travel destination. Some people have a bucket list already worked out for each trip and others need a little more inspiration. Inspiration can come in the shape of travel guides, books and of course travel movies. The following movies travel to different parts of the globe (and history!!!) including, Tibet, Canada, Spain and Mount Everest and offer plenty of travel inspiration.

#1 Into the Wild (2007)

Into the wild is an adaptation of novel by John Krakauer novel about Christopher McCandless and his travels across Norther America and into the Alaskan wilderness. This film was written and directed by Sean Penn and was nominated for 2 academy awards.

#2 The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

The Secret life of Walter Mitty tells the story of Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller), an employee of Life Magazine who spends his time day dreaming of adventures while working with a freelance photographer (Sean Penn). Mitty is working on the companies final edition when he notices one of the photo negatives is missing, setting of to try and find it sends him on a series of adventures. 

Along the way Walter visits, Greenland, Iceland and the Himalayas and this movie is a great escape for anyone spending their life dreaming of travel. A classic scene is Walter skateboarding into the beautiful town of Seyðisfjörður in Iceland.

#3 The Motorcycle Diaries (2004)

The Motorcycle Diaries is a fantastic movie that tells of ride from Brazil to Peru (8000 miles) by a young Che Guevara and his friend Alberto Granado. Neither had previously been out of Argentina and along the way they discover the differences in daily life between the rich and the poor.  

Che Guevara grows up to become a Argentinian Marxist revolutionary and a major figure in the Cuban Revolution. This is a fantastic movie and well worth the watch especially if you are heading to Latin America.

#4 The Endless Summer (1966)

The Endless Summer is a fantastic surfing movie from 1966 which involves 2 surfers Michael Hynson and Robert August on an around the world surfing adventure looking for the Perfect Wave. Their travels takes them from home in California to Australia, South Africa and Hawaii. This is a fantastic travel movie worthy of spot number 10 on our list.

One week is a little know Canadian movie starring Joshua Jackson (Dawsons Creek) and tells the story of of Ben Tyler who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and his motorcycle trip across Canada. The movie includes some amazing Canadian scenery as Ben begins to reevaluate his live.

#7 Sherpa (2015)

Sherpa tells the story of the 2014 Ice avalanche at Mount Everest and the subsequent closing of the climbing season that year.  This movie focuses on Phurba Tashi who has successfully made 21 climbs of Mt Everest and is working for a New Zealand expedition company. 

As they were filming tragedy strikes and an avalanche kills 17 Sherpa who were heading up the mountain to setup camps. The movie changes focus from Phurba to the rescue effort and then the fight between Sherpa and foreigners who are accused of risking the Sherpa lives. 

Unfortunately the following year a massive earthquake hit Nepal and the climbing season was again postponed until 2016.

The Darjeeling Limited tells the story of 3 brothers as they travel across India. The 3 haven’t spoken for over a year since their fathers funeral try to bond with each other along the journey. THis is a great film about India and the Himalayas and stars Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman.

#9 The Way (2011)

The Way is a movie starring Martin Sheen and directed by his son Emilio Estevez shows a fathers pilgrimage of the Camino de Santiago with his sons ashes. This pilgrimage  follows the traditional route from the north of Spain to the Santiago de Compostela which is the shrine of the apostle St James. 

Along the way the father meets other pilgrims and they face challenges while learning about themselves. This movie is a great movie for anyone contemplating walking the Camino de Santiago which ca take months.

Seven Years in Tibet tells the story of Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer who visits Tibet during World war II and the subsequent Chinese invasion. Harrer (Brad Pitt) visits the holy city of Lhasa and becomes a tutor to the young Dalai Lama and learns the teachings of Buddha. With the Tibetan border still closed to foreigners this movie might be as close as you can get to the holy city.
