9 Best Northern Lights Hotels in Norway (Updated 2023)
Chase the Northern Lights in Norway and stay in these amazing hotels and apartments.
Norway is an amazing place to visit all year round and equally beautiful in summer and winter. If you want a great destination with amazing Aurora Borealis viewing then Norway is a good option. But where do you go?
Usually people automatically say Tromsø is the best place in Norway to see the dancing green lights and believe me you will not be disappointed. Tromsø is located in the middle of the Aurora Zone and is easy to get to, has great accommodation and a wide range of restaurants and nightlife. Unfortunately the city has become a little too popular and the light pollution can leave visitors disappointed.
To understand Norway you need to know your geography, the country is long and thin sharing a border with Sweden in the south, Finland and Russia in the far north. The capital Oslo is located too far south to see the lights and the chances improve the further north you go.
The Arctic Circle cross Norway about half way up the border with Sweden in the mountainous area of Saltfjellet, In our opinion the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights lie anywhere north of this. The more remote the location the better the views will be.
In our research we believe that the best views of the Aurora Borealis in Norway are in the towns of Kirkenes in the far north, or Ballstad in the Lofoten islands area. These offer the balance of easy access compared to popularity and light pollution.
